Celta Vigo are working on a contract extension for Javi Rueda after turning down an offer from Nottingham Forest for the Spanish defender earlier this year.

The club have held discussions with Rueda’s representatives for several weeks, according to El Español’s regional outlet Treintayseis. The 24-year-old signed a deal through to 2029 last October, but Celta are now considering extending that agreement by another year and improving his salary.

Nottingham Forest’s interest emerged in August, when the Premier League side made an approach for the right-sided defender. Celta rejected the offer and made clear that they wanted to keep him in Galicia.

The proposal reportedly offered Rueda a significant increase in wages, but the player did not push to leave. His preference to remain at Celta has helped the club move forward with discussions over improved terms.

Rueda has become an important option for head coach Claudio Giráldez, whose system places considerable demands on the wide players. The defender’s performances and tactical contribution have strengthened his position within the squad.

Giráldez had been vocal about his desire to retain the player during the summer, making clear that he did not support a departure.

“He is an important player for us. We want him here, and I trust he will be here, that we will not sell him,” the Celta manager said at the time.

The club’s decision to reject Nottingham Forest’s approach reflected that confidence in Rueda’s importance to the team. The discussions now centre on the length of a possible extension and the financial terms of an improved contract.

An agreement through to 2030 is among the possibilities being considered, although no deal has been announced. The negotiations are expected to continue without undue haste, with both parties seeking terms that work for the player and the club.

Rueda’s future is therefore increasingly focused on extending his stay in Vigo rather than making a move to the Premier League. Celta have retained a player they regard as central to Giráldez’s plans, and the contract talks offer a chance to formalise that status with improved terms.
