Mikel Arteta wants guarantees that Arsenal will continue to back him financially before committing to a new contract, as the Premier League leaders close in on their first title in more than two decades.

Talks between Arteta and the club hierarchy over an extension are already underway, according to BBC Sport.

His current deal, worth £10 million a season and signed in 2024, has less than 12 months to run.Initial discussions are described as heading in a positive direction. Both Arsenal and Arteta are understood to be keen to continue working together. The club's ownership — driven by Josh Kroenke and CEO Richard Garlick, both central to the 2024 deal — view securing his future as a priority heading into the summer.

The sticking point is not whether a deal gets done, but on what terms.Arteta is seeking assurances that the level of financial backing he has received in recent years will continue. Arsenal spent more than £250 million in last summer's transfer window alone, and the manager wants confirmation that ambition will not be scaled back.

His salary will also need to be renegotiated. At £10 million a year he is one of the highest-paid managers in the world, but a new deal is expected to reflect his status further.

Arteta has transformed Arsenal since taking over in December 2019, finishing second in the Premier League in three consecutive seasons. With the title now within touching distance, a deal is expected to be finalised once the campaign concludes. Both parties have agreed to focus on the final weeks of the season first.

If Arteta lifts the Premier League trophy this spring, he will do so having not won a league title with any club. The contract talks, whenever they reach a conclusion, will be straightforward by comparison.
