Massimiliano Allegri has emerged as the leading candidate to become Real Madrid's next head coach, with the AC Milan manager understood to be the preferred choice of the club's hierarchy.

OKDIARIO reports that Allegri, 58, is now ahead of all other candidates in Real Madrid's internal assessment, with Florentino Pérez personally supportive of the appointment.

The Italian has a distinguished track record across Serie A — six league titles, five Coppa Italia wins and three Supercoppa — and is seen within the Bernabéu as a natural successor to Carlo Ancelotti in terms of man-management and dressing room authority.

Allegri nearly joined Real Madrid on two previous occasions. In 2019, following his successful first spell at Juventus, talks advanced before breaking down. In 2021, a full agreement was reportedly in place — three years at €8.5 million per season — before a last-minute meeting with then Juventus president Andrea Agnelli changed his mind. President Pérez views this summer as a third and potentially decisive attempt.

His current contract at AC Milan runs until June 2027, and any deal would require compensation to be paid to the Rossoneri. Relations between the two clubs are described as cordial, and Allegri himself is understood to be open to leaving for the right offer.

Former Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci has publicly endorsed the appointment.

"Because of the way he manages the dressing room and his understanding of the game, Allegri is a manager very much in line with Real Madrid's style. He knows how to take the pressure off the players, allowing them to play with complete freedom.

"The Madrid shirt comes with significant pressure, and I think Allegri would be a good fit — he is very similar to Ancelotti in the way he manages."

The alternatives remain in play. Enzo Maresca, whose Chelsea side won the FIFA Club World Cup last summer and the Conference League the season prior, is seen as a modern, forward-thinking option. Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann, 38, is another name in circulation, with speculation that he could reach a pre-agreement with Real Madrid before the World Cup concludes. Mourinho, currently at Benfica, retains admirers within the club's leadership.

Alvaro Arbeloa is expected to remain part of the club's sporting structure in a different capacity after the season ends.
