Valencia took an early lead through Dani Raba, but Yassir Zabiri equalised before half-time and Iván Martín put Racing Santander ahead shortly after the restart. Substitute David Otorbi rescued a point for Valencia, who nearly snatched victory when Hugo Duro missed a late opportunity.
Aguirre considered the result fair, despite believing his team had threatened to take all three points after recovering from a difficult spell.
“I think the draw is fair. It would have been unjust if Hugo Duro's goal in added time had gone in for them,” the Valencia coach said.
“I think we were serious and worked for each other. The substitutions gave us a lot, and we could have taken something more. We came close, but I think the result is fair.”
The Mexican also praised Racing, who pushed forward with intensity and made life difficult for the visitors at El Sardinero.
“Racing are a very good team. They came at us like planes, and I must congratulate the opposing manager for what they showed on the pitch. They also had a crowd that put us under a lot of pressure,” Aguirre said.
He admitted Valencia still had work to do, particularly in possession and defensive organisation.
“At times we gave an impression of fragility. We need a little more work. We have worked, but we still need more. We have recovered our energy and desire to play. We saw a solid, united team that will always compete.”
Aguirre singled out Raba and Otorbi, admitting he had not known either player before taking charge. Raba opened the scoring early, while Otorbi came off the bench to level the match in the second half.
“I didn't know Otorbi and Raba at all. When I left LaLiga, they didn't exist. I saw them training and knew they played well,” he said. “Raba had gone more than a year without scoring and got a good goal, although he gradually ran out of energy.”
Racing manager José Alberto was pleased with much of his team's performance, describing the opening half as the best since he took charge. But he regretted their failure to turn their attacking pressure into a win.
“We did a lot of things well in a match that became complicated from the start. It was the best first half since I've been the Racing coach. In the second half, we also had good spells,” he said.
He believed Valencia had not deserved to win and pointed to the chances created by his side.
“We had 20 shots towards the opposition goal and created opportunities to win. We have to be more decisive in defence.”
José Alberto also credited Valencia and Aguirre, but said Racing must become more clinical at both ends if they are to convert promising performances into victories.
